The Global bioplastics industry to increase production up to four times more till 2017

As the international market of bioplastics production is stretching day by day, the production capacity of the global bioplastic industry is expected to increase fourfold till 2017. Same is true about the Korean bio-industry with production value of about 7.12 trillion won according to the 2012 report. An announcement has been made by the Ministry of trade, industry and energy in the Korean market in 2014 according to which about 215 billion won will be invested during next five years on the biochemical industry for growth and development. Korea possesses a well setup record of R&D in the biomaterial industry. In 1999, KBPA (Korea Biodegradable Plastics Association) has been set up for expansion of bioplastics market in the country. According to a report, the Korean companies are working to invest upon the bioplastics production since 1993 and also those companies are successful in relevant research and development programs. Still something is missing till now for the right balance. A general concern in this direction is that regulations of the Korean Government are not favorable for the bioplastics industry. Despite of proper investment in green industries and green growth by the former president, Lee Myung Bak, the bioplastics industry in the country is not being benefitted as per expectation.

Matrìca starts bio based chemistry venture based on thistles

Matrica SpA of Italy launched the first biochemical plants officially for conversion of vegetable oils into monomers. Planning is here to launch similar kind of 2 more plants soon in Porto Torres for using the oil from thistles. For production of oil monomers, plasticizers and other bioproducts are used as base products. Thistles are employed for the manufacturing of honey during flowering stage while stem is used in biocomposites. All these three plants will be subjected for an overall investment of about 244 million dollars according to the statement of the company. These plants are capable of raising total production of 70 thousands metric tons annually.

Matrica is partner of 50:50 percent with Versalis and Novamont; both of these companies are respectively Italian petrochemical products’ manufacturer and the international bioplastic group. This joint venture utilizes a proprietary technology which will be more advance than existing technologies. According to Catia Bastioli, the managing director of this new venture, these plants have not been designed to use ozone during oxidative scission reaction; in this way azelaic acid and pelargonic acid is produced as intermediate products. The entire process of vegetable oil development is environment friendly.
