Matrìca starts bio based chemistry venture based on thistles

Matrica SpA of Italy launched the first biochemical plants officially for conversion of vegetable oils into monomers. Planning is here to launch similar kind of 2 more plants soon in Porto Torres for using the oil from thistles. For production of oil monomers, plasticizers and other bioproducts are used as base products. Thistles are employed for the manufacturing of honey during flowering stage while stem is used in biocomposites. All these three plants will be subjected for an overall investment of about 244 million dollars according to the statement of the company. Matrica is partner of 50:50 percent with Versalis and Novamont; both of these companies are respectively Italian petrochemical products’ manufacturer and the international bioplastic group. This joint venture utilizes a proprietary technology which will be more advance than existing technologies. According to Catia Bastioli, the managing director of this new venture, these plants have not been designed to use ozone during oxidative scission reaction; in this way azelaic acid and pelargonic acid is produced as intermediate products. The entire process of vegetable oil development is environment friendly.
