Bio-Succinic Acid Contract Signed Between PTT-MCC and Bioamber

BioAmber is joining hand with PTT-MCC Biochem for its first succinic acid take or pay contract; in 2011, this collaboration was formed between PTT Public Company Limited of Thailand and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. Establishment of PTT-MCC for formation of development of PBS (Polybutylene Succinate), this is a biodegradable plastic developed with butanediol and succinic acid. Currently, this company is developing its first PBS plant in Rayong, Thailand. According to the expectation, the PBS plant will be ready for operations till 2015; it will consume about 14 ktpa of succinic acid while its capacity will be of 20 ktpa. On other hand, BioAmber is planning to start up its 30 ktpa bio succinic acid plant in Canada, Sarnia and Ontario. Analysis of the current PBS market from the aspect of Tecnon OrbiChem, the current PBS manufacturers shows that many challenges are there in the market nowadays. As per the BioAmber’s recent report, engineering for the plant is about to complete and 95 percent of all equipments has been ordered for timely delivery. The Sarnia project is going well from schedule and budget point of view. In this way, BioAmber will be able to supply minimum of 80 percent (11.2 ktpa) of biosuccinic acid required by PTT-MCC; this will be possible after commissioning of PTT-MCC’s PBS plant and Sarnia biosuccinic acid plant.

Why all traffic lights becoming green for BioAmber?

BioAmber is paving its new way towards success by declaring that it will supply at least 80 percent of PTTMCC Biochem’s bio succinic acid requirements within upcoming 3 years. Mitsubishi and PTT together set up their joint venture in the form of PTTMCC Biochem. This united project is subjected for production and sales of PBS i.e. polybutylene succinate which is made up of succinic acid and 1,4 butanediol. JV partners are working for development of a PBS plant which is expected to offer about 20K tons production every year. According to BioAmber, the projected PBS plant will have full capacity of consuming up to 14K tons per year while BioAmber signed an agreement to supply up to 11,200 tons bio succinic acid to PTTMCC by 2017.  More about the matter can be discovered here - www.biofuelsdigest.com/bdigest/2014/05/01/why-are-all-the-traffic-lights-turning-green-for-bioamber/

BioAmber has two special properties to meet this exclusive task. First, the company focuses on the right products first, the Biomass program manager of the company, Paul Bryan highlighted good opportunities in the production of bio succinic acid and related benefits of this deal with utilization of oxygen in Biomass. Secondly, the company has created a strong strategy on the basis of careful aggregation of various factors linked with the goal. From investment to outcome, they know well how to earn good revenue and run an effective R&D program.

Succinity successfully produces its first commercially available bio-succinic acid

Succinity GmbH, which is the joint venture between BASF and Corbion Purac for the manufacture and commercialization of bio-succinic acid, has successfully started its first production facility which has the capacity of producing 10,000 metric tons per year for the global market. Succinity is in the process of planning another large-scale facility.

The managing director of Succinity, Philipp Walter believes that this plant is a “key milestone” in achieving their goal of becoming a major producer of bio-succinic acid. He thanked the team in Montmeló where the plant is located on a Corbion Purac site.

The manufacturing process involves the use of renewable raw materials and the fixation of carbon dioxide. Basfia succiniciproducen, which is the patented microorganism, provides flexibility to the usage of various feedstocks. The closed-loop process used in the manufacture of the biobased product ensures that there is no major waste and the downstream processing technique makes sure that the production quality is very high.

The companies have been concentrating on the development of bio-succinic acid since 2009 due to the increasing need of eco-friendly products. This product has a much better carbon footprint than conventional succinic acid and can be applied in the manufacture of a number of products including polyurethanes, bio-polymers, coatings and products of life science.
