Succinity successfully produces its first commercially available bio-succinic acid

Succinity GmbH, which is the joint venture between BASF and Corbion Purac for the manufacture and commercialization of bio-succinic acid, has successfully started its first production facility which has the capacity of producing 10,000 metric tons per year for the global market. Succinity is in the process of planning another large-scale facility.

The managing director of Succinity, Philipp Walter believes that this plant is a “key milestone” in achieving their goal of becoming a major producer of bio-succinic acid. He thanked the team in Montmeló where the plant is located on a Corbion Purac site.

The manufacturing process involves the use of renewable raw materials and the fixation of carbon dioxide. Basfia succiniciproducen, which is the patented microorganism, provides flexibility to the usage of various feedstocks. The closed-loop process used in the manufacture of the biobased product ensures that there is no major waste and the downstream processing technique makes sure that the production quality is very high.

The companies have been concentrating on the development of bio-succinic acid since 2009 due to the increasing need of eco-friendly products. This product has a much better carbon footprint than conventional succinic acid and can be applied in the manufacture of a number of products including polyurethanes, bio-polymers, coatings and products of life science.
