Bio-based chemical industry is growing with the NatureWorks valuable Ingeo project

With the requirement of technical development and sustainable energy solutions, everyone is focusing over bio-based industry and chemistry nowadays. According to Steve Davies, the Director of public affairs NatureWorks, bio-based chemistry has attained good position in the international market. The market demand and increasing requirement of getting alternatives for conventional energy sources motivates researchers to discover new options with the bio-based raw materials. Long term growth potential can be judged with variety of factors regarding performance, price, channel development, feedstock diversity and production ability.

NatureWorks is working hard to find the process of converting methane into lactic acid directly under an R&D contract. This research will help the company to find a feasible way to simplify the Ingeo manufacturing route. Ingeo is competitive for other resins for its performance, competitive price, low carbon footprint. The product is identified by multiple users and producers where performance is the utmost demand. The second plant of the company will be set up with the idea of using sugarcane or cassava for manufacturing of Ingeo. The company is investing in a joint technology development program with Calysta for the feasibility of methane conversion. Alternative feedstocks for Ingeo will support for price stability.

Genomatica to proceed for development of nylon intermediate to meet international demand

Genomatica possesses eight issued U.S. patents and multiple pending applications internationally for caprolactam and adipic acid. Many options are there for the company for growth of engineering plastics developed with bio-based content. The company declares that majority of nylon intermediates are on focus for the 3rd publicly revealed development program. These intermediates also involve caprolactam, adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine. Moreover, a development process technology is on progress for the production of bio-based materials out of these intermediates. In this way, a rough estimation of the annual market from these three chemicals is more than 18 billion dollars.

Now, the company is engaged in the bio-based process that offers the same chemical that are made up of petroleum based feedbacks. Also, one more thing being taken under consideration in the production is to evaluate economics and sustainability of the product. One more benefit of the opportunity is to avoid the unwanted price rise in oil based plastics; in addition, the products will be eco friendly as per expectation. As the process of developing biobased products include some micro-organisms, cellulose sugar from biomass and conventional sugars comprise the feedstock for them. Nylon intermediates are recovered through the fermentation process.

DuPont looking ahead to escalations in bioplastic

DuPont Co. is planning to develop its portfolio of biopolymers with sustainability feature. With the day by day increasing competition in the world of bioplastics, demand of efficient bioplastic manufacturers has been raised by 19 percent on international level. Rick Bell, the manager of DuPont states that the company is planning to make about half of the pace of its product line biobased within 15 years. As the company is going through the process of conversion of polymers into biobased feedstocks from petro based feedstocks, soon the company will have most of its part converted into biobased production lines. The rate of conversion of feedstocks depends upon the technology and economic efficiency of the company. The company is committed for development of innovative biopolymers along with novel applications for relevant materials. DuPont spared 6.3 million dollars for acquiring Dansico; the expert of enzyme chemistry. According to the president of performance polymers of DuPont, Patrick Lindner, Dansico has good efficiency of taking biobased feedstocks; the company works extensively for breakdown of material for manufacturing of new ones through the enzyme chemistry. DuPont works for elaborating capabilities of Danisco in the field of biobased processing for production of useful chemicals conversely. This makes the company capable of developing low cost polymers with innovative properties.
