Brazil is moving step by step forward in the direction
of development in the biotech industry. Multiple leading biotech companies in
the country are joining forces together to form the ABBI i.e. Brazilian
Industrial Biotechnology Association. The main objective of this combined
effort of reputed companies like BP, BioChemtex, BASF, GranBio, Amyris, DuPont,
Novozymes and Rhodia is to foster the plan of developing industrial biotechnology
in the Brazilian society. To support this awesome project financially, BNDES,
the Brazilian Development Bank has invested R$1.2 billion. During the upcoming Bio
World Congress in Philadelphia, discussion about investment strategy of the
group will occur. GranBio and UFRJ are also involved in groups supporting the
ABBI financially. Full story on this matter can be read here- http://greenchemicalsblog.com/2014/05/05/brazilian-industrial-biotech-association-abbi-launched/
On other hand, ABBI is also looking for the chance of
promoting a dialogue to policy makers and stakeholders for improvement of the
country’s biotechnology regulations; they want some upgrading in this
direction. Good investments are being done R&D programs, capacity and training
for getting skilled man resources. The newly formed biotechnology group is
also looking for the way to collaborate among educational institutions and the biotech
industry all over the country and regions around it. All the collaborating
companies of ABBI are producing biobased renewable products using sugarcane as
feedstock.
