Avantium has announced that it has secured €36 million from the private sector to build a plant for the commercial production of the bioplastic polyethylene furanoate (PEF). Numerous high standard companies such as Swire Pacific, Coca-Cola, Danone, Alpla are engaged in production of PEF and preparing to plan the venture with investment of Avantium. Advancement in this direction can take within three years. According to the expected production, 50 million kg PEF is to be manufactured till 2017. In this way, packaging companies will be able to carry out special tests for using components. Avantium set up its priority for development of next generation feedstock to produce plastic.
According to Tom van Aken, Avantium’s CEO, the company is taking great step for broad level commercial development of PEF. The YXY technology of the company is capable of manufacturing the totally recyclable PEF from complete feedstocks. The current production of Avantium is 20 tons annual from the company’s Netherland based production series.
