Mexico City enjoyed announcement of oxo-biodegradable technology by three leading polyethylene providers but now the project has been denounced. Actually, the company feels that this technology is not supportive for maintenance of sustainability and eco friendly conditions. According to the spokespersons of these companies, use of degrading additives is not guaranteed for meeting the demand of sustainable and eco friendly polyethylene supply. Also, there is no proof that the selected biodegradable additives can be subjected for landfills and recycling.
In a letter sent to various departmental stores of the country, chairmen of all the three leading polyethylene suppliers stated that they wrote to ANTAD after knowing that some affiliated members had been specifically mentioned in their report about the oxo-biodegradable additives in their packaging bags and products. The reports indicated towards inefficiency of oxo-biodegradable plastics for being degraded completely. Damaging the waste and recycling of products become complicated in this way. According to Symphony’s Stephens, the parliament was asked for commenting on the proposal on tax free recyclable bags; then a representative of the organization even proposed to impose ban on the suggested technology. This can be one of the reasons that companies suspended the idea of working with oxo-biodegradable technology.
